The Spark

Long-form thinking on go-to-market and commercial strategy for datacenter technology.

Building Momentum by Working Smarter

In my role as a partner scale manager, I was responsible for leading the alignment between two major technology companies across EMEA. One of the more challenging aspects of this role was setting yearly targets and goals. This complex process required months of preparation, often beginning discussions in Q3 of the previous year to be ready for Q1. With numerous variables to consider across both organizations, prioritizing and aligning objectives was no easy task, often leading to a complicated and detailed planning process.

This scenario is likely familiar to many businesses where juggling competing priorities and goals creates a challenging environment. While we often dedicate significant time to analyzing broader business strategies, it’s just as important to focus on personal productivity and how our individual efforts contribute to the company’s success. This newsletter emphasizes how taking the time to analyze our own work processes can build momentum and drive efficiency.

Strategies for Enhancing Productivity and Impact

A critical element in driving momentum is understanding where to focus your attention. Small adjustments in how we organize our work and time can lead to significant improvements in productivity and impact. However, making these changes can be challenging. Doing things differently requires effort and a willingness to step out of comfort zones, but the potential benefits are substantial.

1. Evaluate and Prioritize Your Activities

Start by taking a detailed look at the activities you engage in each week. Document a list of key tasks that consume a significant amount of your time. After a week, review this list and critically assess what you should start, stop, or continue. Ask yourself which activities are truly driving value and contributing to your goals. This reflection helps you identify tasks that may be consuming time without delivering results, allowing you to refocus on high-impact activities.

2. Leverage Your Network for Success

Next, consider the people you interact with regularly. Evaluate who in your network is aligned with your work or goals and explore how you might collaborate more effectively. Think beyond your immediate team—are there individuals in other departments or even outside your organization who share a common interest? Building strategic relationships can open up new avenues for achieving your goals more efficiently. Additionally, identify the most influential stakeholders in your network. These could be individuals in key positions who can provide support or “air cover” for your initiatives. Cultivating these relationships can be a game-changer in driving your success.

3. Enhance Communication and Reporting

How you communicate your progress, challenges, and opportunities can significantly impact your effectiveness. Consider whether changes in your audience or messaging could increase awareness and ownership of your work. By improving how you report on your activities, you can foster greater collaboration and support within your team, leading to better alignment and faster momentum.

The Power of Regular Analysis

Taking time to analyze your work processes and stakeholder relationships is not just a one-time exercise but should be a regular practice. For example, in my corporate days, I instantiated a “map-day” each year to align goals and strategies across two companies. This process involved spending a day mapping out key objectives, stakeholders, and activities, with participants from both partner companies ensuring everyone was on the same page. This exercise allowed us to identify the biggest opportunities and risks, ultimately making us more efficient, even when working across different countries and companies.

Implementing a Personal “Map-Day”

You can adopt a similar approach in your work. Start by setting aside time at the beginning of the year to document and review your key activities and stakeholders. This exercise can help you identify areas where you can streamline your efforts or engage others more effectively. Consider involving your manager in this review process; their insights could provide valuable perspective and lead to surprising suggestions.

Mid-year, revisit your initial analysis to see what’s working and what needs adjustment. This regular reflection not only helps maintain momentum but also ensures continuous improvement. Over time, you can refine this process to better suit your specific role and goals, whether you’re an individual contributor, manager, or director.

Conclusion

Investing time in analyzing how you work and interact with others can significantly boost your productivity and the momentum of your business. By regularly evaluating your activities, leveraging your network, and enhancing communication, you can ensure that your efforts are focused on the most impactful areas. This approach fosters continuous improvement, alignment, and, ultimately, greater success for both you and your organization.
